ERIN PRESTON ART

ARTIST STATEMENT

Starting as a young child, I was always drawing and creating art. I would use crayons, markers, and pens to create colorful idealistic scenes of places I wished to visit someday, my own version of book covers for whatever series that I was reading at the time, and scenes from movies while focusing on how the actor’s expressions in a single moment were evoked emotion and tension in that specific scene. I also had a keen interest in all types of animals and would spend hours looking through books to learn as much as I could about them, but most of all, to marvel at their beauty.

As an artist, I have worked in different mediums which include acrylic and watercolor paint; stone, clay, and mixed media sculpture; colored and graphite pencil; and photography. My artistic style is diverse, but a common theme seen throughout my work is the use of bold colors, which are often inspired by colors and patterns seen in the animal world.

THESIS STATEMENT

In my work, I seek to transcend the literal representation of animals, focusing instead on their essence, energy, and emotional resonance. Through abstraction, I aim to distill the dynamic rhythms and subtle nuances of the animal world into visual form, using color, shape, and texture to evoke the power, grace, and untamed spirit in all creatures. The beauty of abstract animals is that it allows the viewer to have a more subjective, emotional, or symbolic interaction with the concept of the animal itself.

By breaking down the familiar into fragmented, organic compositions, I explore the ways in which humans perceive animals not only as physical beings, but as symbols of instinct, freedom, and wildness. The abstract animal forms that emerge from my work are not confined by anatomical accuracy; instead, they exist in a realm where emotion and perception converge, offering an invitation to contemplate the deeper, often hidden, connections we share with the non-human world.

My use of abstraction allows for a more intimate interaction between the viewer and the subject, where the animal is reimagined, fluid, and open to interpretation. Through this process, I hope to evoke a sense of wonder, while encouraging a reflection on the relationships that bind us to the natural world—relationships that are often overlooked amid modern life.
